Albert S. Purpura was born in Brooklyn, New York, and served in World War II (WWII) with the 1st Armored Division from January 1941 through July 1945. He was stationed at World's End Camp in Ireland and took part in the North African invasion. He spent five months in Anzio and participated in the capture of Rome, Italy, on 6 June 1944.
